Shoreline

The long-planned redevelopment of the old South Fremantle power station and surrounding land is billed as the biggest coastal urban redevelopment of its kind in WA. But the size of the project, intended to house 12,000 people as well as a new primary school, entertainment precinct and businesses over 106 ha, means it will take 15 to 20 years to realise.

Wormall Civil is proud to be the civil contractor of choice for Stage 1 of the first precinct, dubbed Shoreline. This precinct is planned to eventually provide some 2,500 homes, 10,800 m² of commercial and retail space and a school. Built over 47 ha, it will also include a beach piazza, public square and school, involving a total investment of $1.1 billion.

Civil works on the former industrial site on the North Coogee coast, bound by the South Beach development to the north and the Port Coogee development to the south, started in April 2015. Stage 1 was finished within a year in early 2016. Ongoing works have been completed by Wormall Civil as a variation to the original contract due primarily to the company’s successful performance on the original scope of works.

The heritage listed power station, which has been closed since the 1980s, will be redeveloped as part of the wider project to include apartments, commercial space and public open space.

Minister for Lands Terry Redman commented that the Cockburn coast redevelopment was “something that has never been attempted before in WA on this scale”.

Charles Yelverton (C.Y.) O’Connor (1843-1902), engineer, was born on 11 January 1843 at Gravelmount, Castletown, Meath, Ireland. His statue with his horse which features above and on the site in a prominent loacation, epitomises excellence in engineering accomplishment and we salute his many fine achievements in Western Australia. Fremantle Harbour, the Perth to Kalgoorlie water pipeline and our railways network were all influenced by him.
